There’s something about winter that always draws me back to the classics. Maybe it’s the chilly days, the calm atmosphere, or just the desire to wrap myself in a blanket with a hot drink and escape to another world for an hour or two.

Welcome to a new corner of the blog-My Recommendations. Each time, I’ll share my favorites on various topics, starting with the movies that shaped me, those I discovered by chance, and those that feel just as relevant today as ever.

Remember the Titans (2000)

Based on a true story, this film follows a racially integrated high school football team in 1970s Virginia. The legendary Denzel Washington plays the new African-American coach leading a group of Black and white students as they navigate racial tensions, prejudices, and challenges both on and off the field.

  • Why I recommend it: I’ve watched this a million times because it’s about so much more than football. It’s about how different people find a way to understand each other, work together, and emerge stronger. It proves that unity and mutual respect can create real change.

Pay It Forward (2000)

This is the story of Trevor, a young boy who suggests a simple idea: do a favor for three people, and instead of paying it back, they must "pay it forward" to three others. This creates a chain reaction of kindness that impacts countless lives.

  • Why I recommend it: It’s a powerful reminder that even the smallest act of goodness can create a massive wave of change. Perfect for anyone looking for a bit of warmth and inspiration in the middle of winter.

The Ron Clark Story (2006)

Based on the true story of a young teacher (played by Matthew Perry) who moves to New York to teach a "tough" classroom that the system has given up on.

  • Why I recommend it: This movie doesn't portray the teacher as a superhero, but as a person with unwavering faith. He manages to see the child behind the noise and the anger. It reminds us that sometimes, all a kid needs is one adult who believes in them to change their entire life.

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

Based on the life of Chris Gardner, a salesman struggling with homelessness while trying to build a career as a stockbroker. Will Smith delivers a heart-wrenching performance alongside his real-life son, Jaden.

  • Why I recommend it: It’s a story of pure perseverance. Even when life is at its hardest, Chris never stops believing in a better future for his son. It’s a masterclass in love and the refusal to give up.

The Hate U Give (2018)

Starr, a 16-year-old girl, lives between two worlds: her neighborhood and her elite private high school. This balance shatters when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood friend by a police officer. Now, she must choose: stay silent or fight for the truth.

  • Why I recommend it: This film transcends boundaries. As a Black woman, I deeply connect with its messages of Black Power, standing up for what is right, and the importance of using your voice. It combines emotion, music, culture, and inspiration-exactly what this blog celebrates.

That’s it for my first round of recommendations! These films move me and make me think about the power of change. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments-have you seen these? Do you have recommendations for me? Let’s discover new things together! 🖤
